B276 Chestnut-breasted Mannikin
Find them near water in reeds and long grasses.
Description:
The Chestnut-breasted Mannikin is a finch with a thick-set body and is distinctive by its black face and the chestnut brown on its breast. It has a grey crown and heavy grey bill. Underparts are white with a black bar dividing from the chestnut breast. It’s rump and tail are a golden orange. The female is lighter than the male and juveniles are brown with no black face or chestnut breast. As they are very social, you will often see them in flocks.
My Sightings:
I first spotted this little bird among reeds and long grasses in Bundamba, in the Ipswich area of Qld, in August 2020. It took me a while to get some decent photos, but glad I did.
I have seen them again in July 2021 at Kalbar, Qld.
