B064 Hardhead Duck

Find it in freshwater swamps and wetlands.

Description:

The Hardhead, also known as the White-eyed Duck, is smaller than most other ducks. While swimming, it appears mainly chocolate brown with some white under the tail. When it flies, one can to see that the underwings are white, edged with brown. It also has a white breast patch which can be seen in flight and when standing in the shallows. The bill has a pale blue tip. Males have a distinct white eye, while the eye is brown in females.

My Sightings:

My first sighting of the Hardhead was in December 2020 at Wonga Wetlands near Albury, NSW.

My next sighting has been in a farm dam at Kalbar, Qld, which it shared with Australian Wood Ducks and Pacific Black Duck.
